"Visit Europe...From Dorset", an art exhibit of travels paintings by Ned Reade
Travel Paintings in Watercolor by Ned Reade
With much of the Northeast in March bathed in muted gray, white, and umber colors, take a virtual trip to Europe and enjoy the bright colors of flowers at a shop in Italy, or relax and envision yourself in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. These are just a few of the watercolor scenes that Ned Reade captured in his pre-pandemic travels, and the visual travelogue of Gothic churches, valley vistas, and intimate villages will be on display in the Dorset Village Library during March from 11-5 Monday through Friday and 10-3 Saturday.
On trips to France, Reade painted en plein air in Paris, Arles, Vezelay, and San Didier near the Swiss border. In Italy he stood at his easel in Amalfi, Portofino, Orvieto, and Terni, capturing the small scale atmosphere of these towns.
Ned Reade studied at La Romita School of Art in Terni, Italy; the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson; the New York School of Drawing and Painting and the Art Students League in New York City. He graduated from Williams College with an art history major and earned his masters degree from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT. He has studied with American Watercolor Society artists including Eric Wiegardt, Mel Stabin, and Betty Lou Schlemm.
Ned shows his work at the McKinney and Doyle Fine Foods Café and the Live 4 Art Gallery in Pawling, NY, at the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, the Kent (CT) Art Association, and at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown, MA. In the spring of 2020 he opened the Live 4 Art Gallery in the village of Pawling to show his work and the works of other artists. Visit nedreade.com and Live4Art Gallery on Facebook.
Ned and his wife, Maria, live along the Battenkill River in West Arlington. Maria is a working partner at Someday Farm in East Dorset; she also serves as managing editor of Edible Vermont magazine. After a 45-year career teaching art at the Trinity-Pawling School, Ned now has time to paint and serve on the boards of Green Mountain Academy of Lifelong Learning and of the Arlington Common / Watkins House project.
Watercolor Classes
During the months of January and February 2022 I will be offering watercolor classes on Monday mornings from 10am to noon, Jan. 10, 17, 24, and 31 and Feb. 7, 14, 21, and 28.
The classes can be taken in person at the Live 4 Art Gallery in Pawling, NY or via ZOOM. (Last year we had people participate from across the US and Canada!)
The series of eight classes costs $250. You can also show up for individual classes at $50 each, a la carte. However, sign up for all 8 classes and you save $150! There might be a Monday when you can’t make a class, but the full package is still the best deal.
Last year’s participants thoroughly enjoyed the classes, and I have spent the intervening months capturing intriguing subjects for this year’s watercolor classes. Over the past 20+ years, I have taught outdoor painting workshops in the summer on Martha’s Vineyard and in Vermont, but I have found the indoor classes to allow for a more controlled setting, for both instructor and students.
FORMAT
In these winter 2022 workshops, I send a photograph of that week’s “assignment” on Thursday. This gives people time to do their drawing BEFORE the painting class begins! Each Monday session will begin with my doing a demonstration painting from that photograph. Participants have about two hours to work through their own painting, and I am “present” to guide and answer questions. Many students continue to tinker with their painting after the class ends around noon. You are encouraged to work outside of class as well in order to make steady progress and fine tune your piece.
Another bonus of this class is that I offer Zoom critiques each Wednesday afternoon at 5 pm where students share their work. Frequently, I will share images from art history of how “painting masters” solved their own challenges. (This makes it sound almost overwhelming, like a full time commitment which may be true but we can sugar coat it!)
Classes will cover the following topics:
1) Sketching and value studies
2) Color mixing
3) Integrating figures into a painting
4) Landscape scenes- farms, street scenes, seascapes
5) Sky studies
6) Still life subjects
Elements of good painting – design, drawing, values, color, texture, and technique – will be emphasized throughout.
Participants should have their own materials: palette, paint, brushes, good watercolor paper, paper towels, sponge, pencil, eraser, sketch pad, and container for water. A more detailed list will be provided to participants well before the first class. For beginners I have a set of materials you can purchase online that will get you started. Each person should have a computer or iPad and a Zoom account.
